Throwback Thursday: An Army Veteran’s Thoughts on the Assault Rifle Debate

Sadly, this one is still relevant

I have somehow made it to the middle of the month without yet posting a Throwback Thursday article (the recurring feature everyone loves to hate). Fortunately, I remembered what day of the week it was and will correct that oversight now. The burning question was which of my older, overlooked articles to feature in the hopes of bringing some life to the thing.

Most of the time, I pull out a piece from my early time on this site that I feel (correctly or not) deserved more attention than it received when first published. I will often blame this paucity of views on having significantly fewer followers in those days, but if that’s the case then how do I explain the lackluster views on stories today, with 18k followers? Medium is a mystery.

Then, after watching a news report about the brewing battle between the Attorney General of Texas and the organizers of the State Fair of Texas over the Fair’s decision to ban firearms this year, I thought about a story I wrote last year on the subject of guns from the viewpoint of an Army veteran. Unlike other stories I’ve used during Throwback Thursday, this one was among my most-viewed and (I think) has more comments than any other article I’ve written in more than three years.
