Three Possible Theme Songs for My New Home in the Country

If you’ve been following my Mayberry Chronicles over the past few months, you know that my slow move from Dallas-Fort Worth to East Texas was finally completed this week. In what may be an ominous sign, I was greeted by four days of no electricity as a result of some hellacious storms, but those hit DFW as well, so maybe God just hates the whole state. Now that I’m settled in, though, a new conundrum has presented itself: a theme song for my new town.

The theme song for my previous residence doesn’t fit, and hopefully never will. I just moved from my hometown, a Purgatory I had escaped at 22 only to somehow find myself back again at 53; the theme for that place was, and will forever be, The Animals’ “We Gotta Get Out of This Place.” Having finally done so, I’m ready to put that tune behind me forever, which means I need a new one.

You may wonder why “Born to Run” isn’t an option, given my love of the song. It’s because while “Born to Run” is indeed The Greatest Song Ever, my favorite song ever, and the one they will play as they lower my earthly remains into the cold, cold ground, it is far too amazing to be associated with anywhere I would be allowed to live.
