Three Films Turning 60 Years Old in 2024 That You Must See Immediately
Seriously; they’re that good
Last week, I wrote about the 50th anniversary of The Godfather Part II, which has had me thinking about other film anniversaries all weekend. There are a number of outstanding ones I could write about next, especially from 1984, which is the year I graduated from high school and thus etched in my memory. However, for some reason the year that stood out most was 1964 (two years before I was born), perhaps because that year saw three of my favorite films released.
I started to write a piece about each of the three movies, but it’s currently 175 degrees (in the shade) here in Texas and both my physical and mental energy are at all-time lows. As a result, I am combining them all into one article. Let’s get started; the sooner I finish, the sooner I can go stick my head in the freezer again.
1. Zulu. This overlooked masterpiece from 1964 is, in my opinion, one of the of the best war films ever made, about an event almost no one remembers: the Defense of Rourke’s Drift in the 1879 Anglo-Zulu War in South Africa. During this battle, a British force of around 150 withstood a two-day assault by a Zulu force of nearly 4,000 warriors.
