Many of you are aware that my mom has been in the hospital over the past few weeks fighting a bad case of pneumonia (and both of us appreciate the good wishes everyone has sent our way); she is now out of the hospital and in a short-term rehab facility getting her strength back up. Until she is back home, I have been staying with my stepdad, trying to do between the two of us what she normally does alone.

Having succeeded at not burning the house down last night, we settled in to watch something I have not seen in years: the bull riding competition from the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. I have been going to the Stock Show since I was a toddler, but most of my time there was (and is) spent giving all my money to the crooked carnies and their rigged games on the Midway. I had forgotten just how much fun watching rodeo can be.

Another thing I had forgotten was how much I love rodeo-themed country music songs (of which there are far too few). For this bonus edition of Rate-A-Record, I give you a few of my favorites.

“Amarillo by Morning” — George Strait
