This was my grandmother's rule as well. It must an Italian superstition too.

…d bars. In most homes, the Christmas tree and decorations go up around the second week in December. They must be taken down and packed away by Epiphany — 6 January — or bad luck will ensue: Ye Olde British Superstition.
