They are seriously mistaken.

 a misund…’ve not written about it at length before (unlike The Wrath of Khan, which I’ve expounded on here). Some fans consider 1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture an ignored cinematic masterpiece; a misunderstood, neglected gem unfairly maligned by critics and dismissed by general audiences. Frankly, they are mistaken.
