The Seven Books I Would Take to a Desert Island

Back in May, I responded to a challenge from Alex Markham to write a story about the eight songs I would take to a desert island. Amazingly, even while writing that one it never occurred to me to ask myself which books I would take along in a similar situation. That was rectified this morning when Terry Barr tagged me in a challenge from Janice Harayda to do just that, but with one less book than the song challenge allowed.

I expected this to be as brutal as the song challenge when it came to cutting out books I love, but it actually wasn’t. Three of the books I picked are ones for which I’ve written full reviews already (I link to those in the titles), three others were obvious picks, and the final one just happened to be staring boldly at me from my bookshelf as I made the list. The song list also had the disadvantage of only allowing one Springsteen tune, so that added to the degree of difficulty.

All that said, on to the seven books that will be my companions until the sea erodes the shoreline enough for the sharks to get at me.
