The Prompt That Finally Broke Me: My Favorite Films A-to-Z

What was I thinking?

A few weeks ago, I fell victim to a writing prompt from Pierce McIntyre that he knew from the start I could not resist. The result was an A-to-Z listing of my favorite songs from the 1970s. It was, as always, a fun exercise that generated both a large number of comments and some similar articles as well.

However, two of my favorite writers once again resisted publishing a musical A-to-Z of their own; Simon Dillon and Eric Pierce have superhuman restraint when it comes to challenges of this sort…except when it comes to movies. So, for the past several days I have been working on an article of my favorite films, A-to-Z. I was sure that would lure these two into the chaos.

What I did not expect was that trying to compile that list of 26 films would be one of the most frustrating endeavors I have embarked upon since trying to quit smoking in the middle of a divorce. Frankly, I don’t think it can be done, a fact that was evident from the letter A.

Remember, this is supposed to be a list of my personal favorites, not necessarily the best film that starts with each letter. My first thought for the letter A was Animal House, mainly because Janice Harayda had mentioned Belushi’s classic line, “Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?”…
