The ‘I Swear I’ll Never Complain About Cold Weather Again’ Edition of Rate-A-Record

I mean it this time

I never learn. At the end of January, as an ice storm hammered Texas, I swore that I would never complain about hot weather again. It’s a vow I make every year when the temperature drops below 40 degrees, and one I regret by mid-June of the same year. Right now, I’d go a month without listening to the Smiths for a day the temps don’t hit triple digits. Hell, it’s bad enough I’d go 12 hours with no Springsteen.

Last July, at the prompting of Mark Holburn and Buddy Gott, I wrote a piece about songs to cool you down during a brutal heatwave. In hindsight, that heatwave was a frigid Arctic breeze by comparison, and though it didn’t actually cool me down one bit, it has at least inspired today’s Rate-A-Record installment.

I’m avoiding the obvious ones like “Ice Ice Baby” and “Cold as Ice;” for all their nostalgic value, they’ve been done to death. I thought about including something from Frozen just to torment you, but cooler heads prevailed (see what I did there?). But enough prologue; I need to type faster because my keyboard is about to melt. And I’m inside.

As with all previous Rate-A-Records, rate the songs in the comments using the now-inescapable Terry Barr/American Bandstand scale of 35 to 98…
