The ‘Each Letter of Your First Name Is a Song’ Challenge — New Miserable Edition

If you don’t expect too much from me, you might not be let down

When Pierce McIntyre tagged me in the “Each Letter of Your First Name Is a Song” writing prompt, my first thought was: “wow, it took him long enough to finally tag me in one of these.” Just kidding, buddy; keep them coming. My second thought was that I would have to use my last name instead, because a) my first name has only four letters (too short for an article) and b) my last name has a “b,” which would allow me to use “Born to Run.”

In the end, I decided to stick with the first name, especially after Paul Walker showed how well our shared first name can be represented with an excellent prog rock piece (I will link to his, Pierce’s, and a few others at the end). Now I just had to find my band, because with only four songs to work with it made sense to have them all come from the same artist. That proved more difficult than I expected.

First, much to my own surprise, I eliminated Springsteen from the start. Part of the reason is that while “Used Cars” from the Nebraska album is a good song and works for the “u” in my name, it’s never been one of my favorites. A bigger reason is my bitterness that I have no “b” in my first name and thus cannot use “Born…
