The common theme I have noticed across the various denominations you've written about is that you hear denominational leaders mention "strategy" and "sustainable model" ad nauseum, yet typically no mention of the Holy Spirit. Churches are not supposed to be Amazon or General Motors, and these declines will hopefully blunt the obsession of the church in the West over numbers and buildings. The church is exploding in Asia, Africa, and South America without a multi-million dollar building program in sight.

I attended an Assemblies of God service at a park in Colombia several years ago where hundreds of people showed up. That congregation has no buildings and no plans to build any. There’s nothing intrinsically wrong with church buildings; they just choose to use whatever limited funds they have to reach their community with the gospel. What a novel idea.
