I was diligently toiling away on a story about the great St. Augustine for my series on the Church Fathers when a notification popped up that notorious troublemaker Pierce McIntyre had mentioned me in a story. My muse told me to ignore it; there was work to be done, and it was almost certainly another Plethora of Pop music prompt/challenge that would derail my current project and send me into a Spotify abyss from which I might never return. It was time to have some discipline.

I have no discipline.

Music prompts are my kryptonite, and this one was impossible to ignore: pick 26 songs, one for each letter of the alphabet. Pierce took the idea from an excellent piece by Mark Holburn titled “The Alphabet Back Catalogue Challenge: My Springsteen A-Z.” His response was to do a list of songs solely from the 1980s, the greatest decade ever:
