…Karen Blixen, “Spøgelseshestene” (1955) (“The Ghost Horses”). We were very quiet, deeply fascinated. Over the years I have read every single of Karen Blixen’s tales, along with her other books, of course, but I never found this tale — until more than a quarter of a century later when a good friend gave my daughter a little book for Christmas. Imagine my feelings when she wanted me to read it to her and I just knew this story — it was the tale from back in the 1950s, never published until the late 1970s, and therefore not in any of the collections I had read. That tells you something of the power of literature.
