Ten Morose Yet Peppy Songs From The Smiths That Are Perfect for Monday

Sometimes all you can do is survive the day

Over the past year or so, I’ve written several articles with the goal of making Mondays a little bit less of a suck-fest with music that will lift your mood (I’ll link to them at the end). I realized very early on this Monday morning, however, that sometimes Monday simply is not salvageable. No matter what you do, it’s just going to, well, suck.

That does not mean you have to stand idly, or silently, by. If “Welcome to the Jungle,” “A Hard Day’s Night,” or “Manic Monday,” won’t change your mood, then I say run with that mood. There’s one legendary band who made bad days bearable precisely by embracing them; they took sad songs and made them peppy (clearly not fully understanding Sir Paul’s advice in “Hey Jude”). That band is, of course, The Smiths.

So, for your completely unfixable Monday, here are ten songs by those cheerfully sad lads from Manchester to form a soundtrack for your Monday blahs. Since I already need massive amounts of therapy from listening to them nonstop for 40 years, I won’t give an in-depth analysis of each song, just one line from the lyrics that sums up why it fits here. And who knows, maybe after listening to these, your day won’t seem so bad after all.
