I was considering what songs to choose for my latest Rate-A-Record installment, leaning heavily toward Springsteen because August is the Month of Born to Run, when a song I hadn’t thought about in ages popped up on an 80s playlist I had on shuffle. This made me wonder what other songs from the Greatest Decade Ever I loved so much that I added them to a playlist and then completely forgot about.

As it turns out, there were a lot of them.

I shouldn’t be surprised. I tend to listen to types of music in spurts: Springsteen every day (obviously), the Smiths at least weekly, and then various bands or genres for weeks on end until I get sick of them. I have been immersed in classic country music lately as part of my Quixotic quest to convince Simon Dillon of its brilliance; next week it might shift to metal 24/7 until this heatwave finally breaks (angry music is perfect for heatwaves).

For this Rate-A-Record, however, I give you three classic 1980s tunes that you either loved and completely forgot or tragically never heard in the first place. If you’re an ’80s kid and these throw you into a nostalgic existential crisis, you’re welcome.
