Putting Some Persistent Spooky Season Myths in the Grave: A Halloween Throwback Thursday
These just refuse to die
We’re exactly one week from Halloween and since it’s a Thursday it’s the perfect time for the dreaded Throwback Thursday piece. Unlike previous October installments, however, this is not a spooky-yet-sadly-unseen short story from years past. Rather, today I’m highlighting a myth-busting story, specifically a Halloween myth-busting story.
Every holiday has some type of myth or misconception surrounding it (Cinco de Mayo is not a celebration of Mexican Independence Day, for example), but Halloween takes it to a whole new level. Consider the following questions:
Have you ever wondered how Halloween as we celebrate it today actually started? Is it a centuries-old pagan festival, a night of devil worship, or just a corporate plot by the major candy conglomerates? Should you still have the local hospital x-ray kids’ candy? Is the Day of the Dead just the Mexican version of Halloween a few days late?
