When Pierce McIntyre issues a challenge through Plethora of Pop, I pay attention. When that challenge is “Nine Concerts I Want to See in the Afterlife,” I immediately stop what I’m doing so I can write down some notes before I forget them.

It was no simple task narrowing this down to nine. How far back do I go? Do I include Mozart and Beethoven? I decided to keep it in the modern era, with only one artist predating the 1960s. Eight of the nine shows listed are only possible in the afterlife because a key member has passed on. As for the ninth show…well, you’ll see.

I could ramble on like I normally do, but this time I’ll show some restraint; just a short comment and then a video that shows far better why they made the list than I could ever put into words. Let’s get started.

Sam Cooke. You probably guessed from the image above that Sam would lead the list, as he should. If you’ve only heard his studio recordings (which are awesome), check out the album Live at the Harlem Square Club, 1963. The man had the smoothest voice ever.
