My Spotify Wrapped 2022 Proved I Spend More Time on YouTube Music
It just wasn’t Spotify’s year for me
In case you couldn't tell from the plethora of celebratory articles, Spotify Wrapped 2022 is here. Stories from Kevin Alexander, Lark Morrigan, Amber Walters, and of course Pierce McIntyre have all popped up in my feed, and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading everyone’s listening results for the past year. For me, though, it’s been revelatory in a surprising way.
I used to listen to virtually all my streaming music on Spotify, but clearly this was not the case in 2022. If you need proof, just look at the image above and tell me in what world I would listen to Bruce Springsteen for only 581 minutes over an entire year. That’s roughly nine-and-a-half hours; I’ll surpass that on any given Sunday.
And it wasn’t just a dearth of Bruce. My grand total for the year is 4,461 minutes of listening time. That’s 74.35 hours, or 12 minutes per day. Given that I listen to “Born to Run” at least once a day (sometimes more), that leaves at most 7 minutes and 31 seconds for anything else. Hell, I probably played “Bendita Tu Luz” by Maná on repeat for an hour preparing for a World Music Rate-A-Record article (thanks again for pointing me to this song and this band, Alex Markham).
