My Overly Ambitious Books, Music, and Movies Challenges for the New Year

A public declaration to keep me accountable

It’s time again for those ever-popular New Year’s resolutions: go on a diet, exercise more, stop considering coffee, cigarettes, whiskey, and tacos as the four food groups. Personally, I plan to do none of those things; I’ve made it five-plus decades on this stupid blue rock ignoring personal-improvement resolutions (that everyone tosses out by February 1st anyway) and I’m not about to change now.

There are more important goals to consider, like what books, music, and films (both new and old) to discover in 2023. Those are the kinds of resolutions I can get behind, especially when you consider that I can drink coffee with Bailey’s, smoke, and eat tacos while doing any of them. Even better, since I will write about at least some of the things I read/watch/listen to, it is actually research for my job and not just “laying around being a bum” as one book-hating family member once described it.

I throw these out here for three reasons: 1) I need one last article to wrap up the year; 2) It will keep me accountable since it’s a public record; and 3) It may inspire some of you to make resolutions you’ll actually enjoy keeping.
