Other than the never-ending Rate-A-Record installments, it’s been a long time since I did a series here, which surprises me somewhat since I enjoy writing them. Besides allowing more room to explore a topic in what is by its nature a brief medium (pun intended), it forces me to actually plan ahead and stick to a schedule, two things that I typically fail at miserably.

The idea for the one I’m starting next week (this is simply the introduction) was first planted in my mind last year while reading an excellent multi-part memoir by Paul Walker about his time as an Anglican priest (Paul has stopped writing on Medium for the time being, which is a loss for all of us). As I have mentioned before, my own faith journey has been, in a word, chaotic, but I think it’s also interesting enough to hold people’s interest for a few episodes. I planned on starting this last summer and then, in line with what I said above, promptly forgot about it. The idea returned recently with more urgency than I expected and for an unexpected reason.

Since my mother’s passing in January, I have spent a fair amount of time with my stepdad, some of their longtime friends, and a few far-flung family members telling stories about mom, as one does during such times. Most of…
