I've never put the emphasis on the "the" before, so I never considered it an exclusivity thing. Plus (at least viewing it as an American) there are a lot of things he says or will say that fall into the category of archaic.

An example of this (and similar to the Defender of the Faith thing), I was honestly surprised at the ceremony yesterday that the new monarch has to swear to basically not mess with the Church of Scotland for the Union to continue. I doubt that even most Scots under 50 knew that was in there, except maybe the handful that are still practicing Presbyterians.
