I think much of surge this was simple demographics. As the Baby Boomers started having kids in the 1960s and 1970s, they went back to church with those kids, something that doesn't seem to happen as much with the Millennials. It happened to a smaller degree with Gen-X; I didn't go back until my kids were born in the 90s.
