How My Denominational Hopscotch was Derailed by a Phone Call, My Dad, and Maybe God Too

The series hit some unexpected speed bumps

Today’s installment of my Denominational Hopscotch series was supposed to feature a denomination I’ve not had a lot of experience with, like the Pentecostals, Presbyterians, or some other faith tradition that starts with the letter P. The whole point of the thing was to write about checking out different churches as I search for a new church home in the wilds of East Texas. That is still the goal (I hate not finishing a series), but it has been derailed/delayed by at least one week as a result of events I never saw coming.

The book of Proverbs has this to say about the best-laid plans: “We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps” (Proverbs 16:9 NLT). I like the following from the novel A Delirious Summer (the book that inspired Denominational Hopscotch in the first place) even better:

“We spend vast amounts of time and energy crafting a thesis in our heads of how life should play out, then almighty God spends an incredibly brief amount of time bowing our thesis to bits.”¹

Yeah…that describes it perfectly.
