Having been both Catholic and evangelical at various periods in my life, I have some thoughts on these two questions, but they would take an entire article. One key factor for the Catholic Church in America is the ongoing battle over Vatican II sixty years later; the two extremist sides continue fighting and the majority in the middle are just done with the whole thing. With evangelicals, especially non-denominational evangelicals, the Sunday service is as important as a political and social event as a religious one.
