Great post. One that comes to mind for me is Hank Williams Jr.’s “All My Rowdy Friends Have Settled Down.” Sure, he mentions his dad in almost every song…I would too if my dad was Hank Williams. But the friends he names in this song (George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash) were all at least 10 years older than him. They became friends, yes, but they started out as influences. I have wondered if the “settled down" lament wasn’t as much about them not making new music as they aged (except Johnny) as it was about not partying like the old days. Just a thought.
Also, thanks for reminding me about Stevie’s “Songs in the Key of Life.” Have not listened to that in years.
