Four Things That Definitely Need to Happen in My New East Texas Home This Year

I am now only a few days away from completing my seemingly unending move from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex to the semi-wilds of East Texas, a journey I have been chronicling here. It will be (and has already been) a challenging transition, in no small part because I am going from living alone with two cats to living with my 87-year-old stepfather (and those same two cats). We have not killed each other yet, though, which is a positive sign.

As the relocation nears its end, I have noticed some things that need to change once I’m a permanent resident of Mayberry (for those new to the series, this is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the town in The Andy Griffith Show). By change, I don’t mean trying to turn the country into the city; there are already far too many transplants from Dallas, San Francisco, and Los Angeles here trying to do that. The changes I want to make are far more important (and personal) than bringing a Starbucks to town.

These are the four things I hope to accomplish before we reach 2025:

1. Trade my Volkswagen SUV for a Dodge pickup truck. It could just as easily be a Ford, but Dodge seems more popular around here. The VW was the only thing I could afford when…
