Five of My Favorite Books for National Book Lovers Day

As if we need a made-up holiday as an excuse to read

Today is National Book Lovers Day, and while it may seem like any other made-up holiday (like National Broccoli Day or National Bring Your Ferret to Work Day), anything that shines a light on books and reading is cool with me. Since the day oddly has no official website (yet another affront to readers), I had to pull the description from that font of all knowledge, Wikipedia:

“This is an unofficial holiday observed to encourage bibliophiles to celebrate reading and literature. People are advised to put away their smartphones and every possible technological distraction and pick up a book to read. Book Lovers Day is widely recognized on global scale.”

Please note that this is not the same as World Book Day, which is celebrated on April 23 each year and is officially sponsored by UNESCO. I don’t want a bunch of peacekeepers in baby blue helmets kicking down my door for confusing the two.

The National Day Calendar, another site that apparently tracks all these various “days,” describes it this way:
