Excellent article (and thanks for the shout out!). I have wondered why fiction is such a stepchild here as well. From the writing side, it is certainly easier to churn out disaster porn than a good fiction piece. From the reading side it makes less sense; you would think good fiction is more appealing to readers than posts about how much/how little someone earned.
