I think part of the Cult of Diana in the US stems from an odd condition we have here: though we could not wait to be rid of King George III, we have had a near-pathological obsession with royalty ever since. The “Disney princess dream” has not helped either. People also love to take sides, especially if one side allows them to feel morally superior, and choosing Diana while vilifying Charles is an easy, if lazy, choice.
