Even in a New Year, I Still Really Hate Mondays
Though these songs help make it better
It may be a new year, but Mondays suck just as much as they did in 2024…and 2004…and 1984…you get the idea. The word alone is enough to make you throw the alarm clock at the cat and pull the covers back over your head. There have been exactly two times in my 59 years (or roughly 3,000 Mondays) that Monday was actually decent: in 1984 when I first saw Springsteen in concert and in 1998 when my oldest daughter was born. The other 2,998 Mondays? Not so much.
The fact that today is again Monday makes it the perfect time for my final Rate-A-Record installment for January. Mondays may be the absolute worst, but the right music can make it almost bearable. And no matter what Buddy Gott may think, this is not simply another excuse to include the Bangles, because I don’t need a reason.
For any of you who are new to the madness that is Rate-A-Record, it is a magical mystery tour of a prompt started by Terry Barr nearly three years ago. He resurrected the old Dick Clark/American Bandstand segment of the same name in which a panel of teens would listen to two songs and rate each one on the odd scale of 35 to 98 and made it something I have been unable to resist. We use the same rating system here. Now, on to the songs.
