Eleven Songs That Always Improve My Normally Surly Mood
Not much makes me happy, but these come close
When Steve Goldberg tagged me in a musical writing prompt about a week ago, I thought it was one challenge I would actually be able to resist. If you know me, the reason should be obvious just looking at the title of his article:
There have been many words used to describe me, most of which I cannot repeat here and still be allowed to publish this in Plethora of Pop (Buddy Gott has a strict no-profanity policy), but joy has rarely been one of them. But since it’s Easter, I thought I’d step out of my grumpy comfort zone and see if I could actually come up with eleven non-Springsteen songs that, to quote Steve’s article, “can always pull me out of a funk.”
I say non-Springsteen songs because obviously anything from the Poet Laureate of New Jersey and the E Street Band will end a funk with the opening chords. It’s simply not possible to hear songs like “Born to Run” and “Sherry Darling” and not instantly feel better. But what other songs do it for me? That’s a…
