Eleven Heavenly Songs to Chase Away Those October Demons

Halloween is in the rear-view mirror, which normally means that the Christmas decorations are about to go up even before we hit Thanksgiving. But after a month of playlists and Rate-A-Record articles focused on the dark side of things, I need a musical palate cleanser before we move into holiday madness 2022.

Contrary to what parents in the 1950s believed (aghast that Elvis could move his hips in an otherworldly way), rock and roll has never been “the devil’s music.” Well, except maybe for Marilyn Manson; that dude is seriously messed up, though I do like his song “Killing Strangers” from the first John Wick film. But I digress; my point is that rock is really quite heavenly, and I can prove it.

To kick off the new month, and since it’s also All Saints Day, I give you eleven songs that are more heaven than hell, more angel than devil, going strictly by the title. That caveat is crucial, because if I also include lyrics things go off the rails pretty quickly. The Cult’s “Lil’ Devil,” made my Halloween list by title alone, but if you include lyrics it gets confusing: “Come on little devil, be my little angel.” See what I mean?
