It’s time again for my weekly Rate-A-Record installment, and the band I’ve chosen for today is one that I had completely forgotten until I fell down a YouTube rabbit hole the other night. What had nagged at me for the past few days was that I was certain that I had indeed written about them before (though admittedly nowhere near as often as I do about Springsteen and The Smiths), yet in going back through the 119–119! — previous Rate-A-Record installments, I could not find them anywhere.

It finally dawned on me that I had actually never included them in a Rate-A-Record piece, but had indeed written a song story about them long ago in a galaxy far, far away (a song story is a short fiction piece that includes as many song titles from the same band as you can reasonable wedge into the story). Since almost no one ever saw that story, I’m combining fiction and Rate-A-Record and including it here before the videos.

Exactly which band is it that deserves far more love than I (and most of you) give them? The header image of this story should make that crystal clear: The Cars.

Some of you just slapped your forehead and said, “how in the world did I forget about them?” Don’t feel bad; I said the same thing. At any rate, below is the original…
