It’s not a game changer, but…

As you probably know by now, Medium has rolled out a new feature that allows readers to tip writers for stories. I rarely write about Medium or its inner workings (most readers could care less how the sausage is made), but there are a few things about this newest development I feel the need to address. I am not going to get into the details of how to set it up here, as that has been covered already in multiple other articles, most hilariously in the one below by The Celtic Chameleon:

I want to focus on a few aspects of this tipping option that haven’t been mentioned ad nauseum, at least one of which is as uncomfortable for you other writers out there as it is for me.

First, while the move to allow tipping for stories seems like a big deal, it’s really an obvious thing that’s taken far too long. The Vocal platform has had this in place for years (one of the few times it’s been out ahead of Medium on anything). It’s also long overdue because it’s something all of us do far more than we even realize.
