Spring has sprung and summer is on the horizon, which means we are fast approaching the best of all seasons: driving season. I’m not talking about NASCAR (though I’m pleased that this is back as well), but rather something I mentioned in my last article: driving down backroads. When I was young you could still enjoy a solitary trip down the major highways of Dallas/Fort Worth between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., but today “rush hour” is a 24-hour thing, so backroads are the only option.

I realize that we drive everywhere regardless of time of year, but the warmer months are ideal time to drive for the sheer enjoyment of the open road rather than commuting three hours to a job we hate or down the street to buy bagels. And thanks to some visionary Australians, we can combine two beautiful things: driving and music. Kelly’s Motors first installed a radio in an automobile nearly 100 years ago (in 1924) and ever since, tunes and tires have gone hand-in-hand.

Back in those glorious days when the highways weren’t jammed packed all the time, we had to rely on either whatever the radio stations were playing or 8-track, and later cassette, tapes.
